In a move that could make life easier for athletes and former athletes, they can now apply for their dues and awards online without having to involve national federations or visit government offices for a physical or records check.
Active athletes seeking prizes, awards or any other form of government recognition can log into the Ministry of Sports portal and upload the relevant documents needed for payment.
“If an athlete was to seek government awards and recognition after a good performance, they had to go through the federation or SAI earlier, and then it went through scrutiny and it took almost a year or two for that to happen. these athletes are getting their due,” Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said Friday at the launch of the new website.
“We have made this system simpler and more transparent. We have used technology to bring more transparency and accountability to the system and it will further help athletes to apply online and they will receive their dues in a limited time.
Former athletes can now also request their retirement online.
“The Deen Dayal Upadhyay Pension Scheme or National Welfare Scheme for Athletes, we have also put online so that the time of the athletes is not wasted on this. The role of SAIs and NSFs has been rendered non-existent so to speak,” the minister said.
“The retirement scheme for deserving athletes was also taking time and many were not benefiting from it. Thus, we have made available to athletes a transparent system that is easy to use. It is user-friendly and technology-driven. We will try to update this system continuously so that life becomes easy and benefits can be reaped. It is easy to apply, takes less time and money is transferred directly to bank accounts via DBT.
Individuals, legal persons, public sector companies can also make financial contributions online.
“NSDF (National Sports Development Fund) is a great initiative to create funds for TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme), other benefits for athletes and infrastructure development. UAPs, companies have helped us to create this fund Individuals can also contribute if they wish. I call on all compatriots, the corporate sector, UAPs and all other institutions to log in and contribute,” Thakur said.
They can contribute to the development of sport in various ways.
“Adopt a player, adopt a game, adopt a hostel, adopt a pitch… You can choose and show up to adopt any player, any sport, any hostel, any sports infrastructure, we are willing to cooperate with you and it will be technology. -motivated and transparent,” he added.
