Online consultation launched to add additional train services in the Midlands

Irish Rail is seeking public comment.

Additional commuter rail services are in the works in the Midlands.

Irish Rail is proposing a new timetable which would see existing routes extended and additional services added.

This includes extending the morning commuter route from Athlone to Galway, to Tullamore; improved journey times on the Limerick to Ballybrophy line; and the return of the service from Carlow to Heuston mid-morning.

The draft proposals have been posted online, with Irish Rail asking people to submit comments.

The public consultation will be open until October 2.

Suggested changes that cannot be implemented during this schedule change will be kept in a database for consideration in future schedule revisions.

The key elements of the proposed new schedules are:

A new Athlone/Westport 7.08am service Monday to Friday providing service to regional commuters along the line.

A new 5.05am service from Ballina to Manulla which will link to the 5.15am Westport/Heuston advanced service Monday to Friday.

The 7.30am Athlone/Galway service will now start from Tullamore at 6.50am Monday to Friday, and will additionally serve Clara.

A number of other minor schedule changes to improve punctuality.

Iarnród Éireann and the National Transport Authority will review all suggestions received.
